One Hundred Eleventh Day of School

In Writing today, we read an anchor text entitled Red is the Best in order to discuss arguement and counter-arguement. Later we will see that one way to provide closure to an opinion is to present a counter arguement.

In Music, we began to take a look at and practice with simple music notation including, quarter notes and quarter note rests.

Parent Conferences

Thank you to the parents who have returned your parent conference forms. However, we were just informed that we will not be in possession of the progress reports in time for parent conference week. If you would rather wait to have a conference on an afternoon following receipt of your child's report card, that will be fine. To secure a definite time in the weeks following, just send a note with your child (letting me know when you would like to come (not Tuesdays). Otherwise, you may still come on the scheduled time for your conference, we just won't a progress report for reference.

Update: We have been notified that we will be allowed unofficial progress reports with preliminary grades at the parent conferences.

Ninety-Ninth Day of School

In Writing today, we edited one of our informational pieces in red ink. When editing in first grade, we look for proper nouns to be capitalized (assessed) and for punctuation to end sentences (aassessed). Then, we circle words which are likely misspelled. Time permitting, we then use one of our spelling strategies to come closer to the standardized spelling of the word/s in question.

In Social Science, we applied our map making skills to make a map of our classroom.

Ninety-Sixth Day of School

In Writing today, we added transitions to our information pieces. We have discoved that using the word also takes the least effort as it doesn't require the addition of any other verbage.

We will be celebrating the 100th day of school this coming Tuesday. And it appears to be our lucky week because Valentine's Day comes up on the following Friday.

In Social Science, we made our first maps.

Unsatisfactory notices went home today in advance of Parent Conferences coming up in March. Students do not need to know the contents of the notice. This is just to inform you of the possiblility that your child's progress report could indicate a grade of 1 or 2 in the indicated subjects, with the exception of the Sciences pending assessment. Please note that grades have been recently posted to Schoology. All students have shown growth in all Reading measures.
