Writing Process Steps

Steps We Have Completed So Far

  • Day 1 -Select a topic from our list of memorable moments (Parents: if you select a story topic about an incident where your child was not present, you will be  writing just as the teacher does and each step will mirror the I Do process. If you select a story topic where child was present, then you may write a We Do where you write with input from your child.)
  • Day 2 -Touch and talk the setting of the story. The setting will tell the characters, the where, and/or the when. Plan (quick-sketch) the setting on the first page in the box at the top.
  • Day 3 -Touch and talk the entire story. Tell the setting, Turn the page. Tell what happened. Turn the page. Tell what happened next. Plan (quick-sketch) the what happened and the what happened next on the second and third pages.
  • Day 4 -Read the plan of your story (say the story out loud while looking at your quick-sketch). Draft (write) the setting on the first page.
  • Day 5 -Draft the what happened and the what happened next on pages 2 and 3.
Next Steps
  • Add transitions.
  • Try adding a hook. The writer can decide later whether or not to include the hook in later/final drafts.
  • Add a closing. this will let your reader know the story is over. The closing may reflect an idea presented in the hook. It may give your reader an idea why you chose to tell this story.
  • Revise your story. This is a multi-step process, likely to take more time than any other step so far.
  • Include a title.
  • Edit your story.
Our next meeting will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. on Zoom.
